If you are seriously using Zhydiv, you have issues.

For all the non-russian speakers on here, it means "kike" in Russian.

So, he can stay classy, in a least two languages?

(Yes, I've seen The Pawnbroker, several times.) ;)

Yes. I'd be very interested in seeing how his version of Pro allows you to download streams, whereas mine doesn't.

get ready... this is a hard one. CTRL-Click the picture. there will be a download option if you have quicktime pro.

I just got done reading Hackers and then Revolution in the Valley, so I recognize samcraig's complaint about a walled garden as something Apple has dealt with since its inception with the Apple ][ being Woz's exception to what soon became a standard complaint about the company.

I understand the desire to have people know how things work. That's the hacker ethic. Hackers want to understand what makes things tick. That's a very useful skill. I applaud it. As someone who knows how to fix my car, and who has put computers together, knew DOS inside and out, wrote assembler code, etc., I can relate to what is being said.

But I applaud Apple's approach. Why? Because I've seen humanity, and most people -- the vast majority -- do not want to know how things work. That itch that hackers have is not shared by most people. Does this lead to the dumbing down of society? No, society was dumb to begin with. The hackers thought they could raise society up from this level by showing them how to hack computers, but most people couldn't care less.

So what do we do with a society that does not care? The hacker says give 'em the hacking tools and let them learn anyway. Steve Jobs said, no, give them a simpler device and let it work for them.

    (edited for brevity)

So why must we insist that Macbooks be completely open, or that the Mac App Store be wide open to anyone who wants to put whatever junk they want inside? The walled garden approach taken by Apple (and almost everything else in our society -- TV, book publishing, sports teams, you name it) is a recognition that we are all different, not everyone wants to hack things, some people simply want to use a tool to do whatever appeals to them.

I'd rather live in a world where Apple creates powerful but simple devices that empower even the tech illiterate, than to live in a world of complicated devices that only a small percentage dare to use. The hackers will always be among us, and hackable devices will always be with us, so don't complain about one company that decided to market to the other 90% of humanity in ways that please the customer very much.

Great post. Just one thing (or maybe 2?)

I never said I didn't like what Apple has done or that the technology isn't great.

What I was stating is that Apple, along with other companies contribute to the dumbing down of society. And then put themselves in a position to speak down to you (ie today's quote by Steve Jobs) about educating the customer.

I don't pretend to have all the answers. One of my majors was in Speech Communications. There's a lot of validity to professionals using language to subjugate and/or exclude other members of society in conversation. The language doctors, lawyers, auto mechanics, you name it all have their own vocabulary which excludes the average person. This also adds "mystique" and credence to the information they state.

So when I say that Apple and other companies are contributing to the dumbing down of society - I say that without prejudice or judgment - but merely a statement of fact. And pretty incontrovertible at that.

I think it's an extremely powerful feature, assuming external peripherals will work just fine in conjunction with the switch out pads.

Having hot-swappable modules with a USB keyboard/mouse gives laptops an entirely new appeal. I think this opens a whole new avenue of interest in the 17" laptop due to the large interface potential in a portable unit.

Weird that he didn't try to shake her off. Mythbusters showed that it's impossible to hold on to a car beyond a certain turning force.

Ok, see that is where I was going with posting this article. I was wondering if it were even possible to hold on to a windshield wiper blade for that length of time? I mean, wouldn't pressure or force or something cause the blade to snap? They just don't seem that strong.

I just spoke with Apple Support because I was worried that an order place today (with the 3-4 week lead-time) would ship before my order which I placed last week when the lead-time was 4 - 5 weeks.

I was told that I shouldn't cancel my order placed last week because it will ship before orders placed after it.

Yay!! I look forward to getting my iPad sooner.:apple::D

I mean... who writes this stuff?

That would be such absolute BS but it wouldn't surprise me at all. "Oh, you want to be able to use more RAM in your Mac? Well that wasn't advertised when we sold it to you, so in order to be able to do that you'll need to hand over $1".

GAA is a mutherfu....bberinksy! I wonder if Apple says the previous 6GB cap was imposed due to a defect in design/manufacturing. The firmware update address the "memory defect" and other problems. This way with the firmware update they would be addressing the defect instead of adding a feature. Consumers keep their soda/candy money. Those 3 class action lawyers would have a field day with Apple's "covering up the defect." Just some ramblings.

So what do you guys think about this:

My girlfriend's babysitt-ee kicked her 3GS in the bathtub a few months ago and she's been using a 2G, original iPhone ever since, and was hoping that she could get a white iP5 this summer. So now she's pretty excited about a white iP4 coming out, and would be ok with getting it if it weren't for the uncertainty about the release of the iP5 (I guess I've made her into a refresh-watcher).

She's eligible for an upgrade and would definitely do so if the iP5 is going to be pushed later in the year rather than the summer (she can't wait to stop using the old iPhone). What do people think? Take the chance and get the white 4?

Could be interesting trying to play music with that 'keyboard' :D

    http://guides.macrumors.com/images/1/17/MacBookConfigInput.png

Certainly looks like it might be what it's for. Little piano keyboard and a mixing console. Looks like something people would use for live performances or traveling. Don't think the keys would repace my keyboard, but the mixing desk looks pretty good.

Ive just listened to the Major Nelson Podcast off iTunes about the new xbox elite, and the reasons they have launched it seem quite reasonable, and why they have done certain things seem quite reasonable.

How many people on this forum have got a 360? How many people actually connect with a wire, or a wireless bridge? Im connecting with a wire. The lack of wireless bridge doesnt bother me, the inclusion of the hdmi port doesnt really irk me that much, I connect to my Samsung HDTV via component cables, and the difference between the two is something that Id not be able to convince someone in an argument about which was better. The 120 Hard drive, fantastic, about time, and you can buy it separately, Yeah i know its expensive, but if you listen to Major Nelsons podcast you'll find out why, and you get a cable to transfer the contents from your 20gig hd to the new one.

After listening to an Microsoft employee, it doesn't sound bad. I wonder why? :D

I really hate reading posts from people who literally no concept of what it might be to be in another persons shoes especially in another culture and country. Your experience is nothing like their experience and making self righteous statements about what's right and wrong and what your job is like and how you keep secrets, do your job, blah blah, is just plain ignorant.I feel ya. It's a mad world...

For someone that created a fluff thread, you're taking yourself too seriously. What did you expect, people to not defend their purchase?

My opinion stands: For the equal-but-opposite reason that I would never buy the 13", there's that group of people that would never buy the 11". The latter group is too practical. The former, too cool. It's personal, as is productivity. Apple did the MBA offerings right this time. But this guy said it best:

You original said that some people would never buy the 11" even if it had more resolution. I pointed out that some apps are limited by the current resolution. You seem to think it proves your point, but it does the opposite. I'm saying for some apps you need more resolution and some apps you need more storage. Nothing about that says that if the 11" offered either it would not be a choice instead of the 13". I see no logic in your statements, simply an attitude.

I think the point today was made that Apple, Inc is not longer Apple Computer, Inc.

Announcing computer stuff along with the non-computer Apple TV and iPhone would have diluted that message.

If there's any company that knows how to keep in the media limelight, it's Apple. My guess is that they're going to let everyone speculate about the Apple TV and iPhone for a month or so and when the press dies down for them, then they'll have another press event for Tiger and iLife.

Besides, Vista's big consumer launch is at the end of January. What better time to steal the media limelight back than to announce software right after that?

How many "events" did Apple end up having last year? It was almost ridiculous! :)

Am I missing something or is this pretty useless for DirecTV customers? Don't get me wrong, I am sure this app is awesome. But I don't see how I would change channels via my iPhone since everything is through a box. Is there a workaround? I'd like the ability to use this, but without channel swapping abilities I'm afraid it's useless for satellite and cable box customers.

Has anyone installed a Copy of Leopard on there Computer and how do you like it so far also how stable is it

Speaking from previous betas of 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3, I can tell you that it's not fun to run a beta of Mac OS X. Sometimes, it's lucky when most things work. With 10.2, I had terrible times keeping Finder going.

Besides, when you're developing a product to make sure it's compliant with a new operating system release, who has time to have fun? (Thankfully, Apple doesn't change major things as much these days.)
