    BTW, how's life, ~Shard~? :D

Life's great, no complaints whatsoever. :)

I also wish Apple used standard ATX power supplies. That way, if you need a new power suply, you can get one from your local electronics store.

That would be nice as well. It would definitely increase the longevity of the Mac, since if you ever wanted to upgrade the P/S, or if it blew, it would be a lot easier to do so. Still possible the way it is of course, but this would probably result in less hassle.

Everyone is trying to get a piece of what Apple created - and not suffer the same fate that all those that tried to compete with the iPod faced.

Without figuring out how to differentiate from what Apple is doing AND show the consumer how they can really USE the tablet, none of these players will do much more than get a small, very small, piece of the [Apple] pie.

Those people that want the iPad to do what a computer does or what a smartphone does, are not looking at the iPad the way it was intended - as something new and different. Why should it have to do what a laptop does or how a computer or phone does it?

I'm guessing that what Apple is really working on is a way to tie together all devices that isn't just a wired interface (think their data center).

One of the three basics that must be proven in order to win a trade dress case, is the likelihood of confusion.

In other words, would someone think they're buying one thing but really getting another, such as might happen with shoes or pills or whatever.

Does anyone think that a normal person would actually confuse a Samsung Galaxy (especially with that huge "Samsung" on it) with an Apple iPhone when they're buying it?

I mean, is Apple going to claim that they're losing sales because the Galaxy is so close to the iPhone that people can't tell the difference? If so, that sure doesn't say much for the iPhone. Or it says a lot for the Galaxy.

That is not the case. The user can know they are buying a product that is a rip off of another and it is still wrong.

I guess I just assumed that anyone who has used a computer for more than two weeks would be capable of typing without staring at the keyboard.

That is highly limited thinking. It might be time to open your mind and learn how and why other people might actually want a particular feature rather than assume that they are the person who is limited.

I, and many others, use our computers for way more than typing.

A simple example is when I use my MBPro on stage with any number of apps for musical performances.

Also the sound engineers use MBPro for audio cues, audio mixing, recording, effects processing. The lighting guys use them.

When you are heavily involved in multitasking you need to be able to see something, identify it and use it, all within a fraction of a second. You are not sitting there touch typing.

Enough time to move diplomatically as well?
There was tonnes of external political pressure exerted on Gadafi in the run up and he didn't shift an inch and proceeded to pick off unarmed protesters to an extent not seen in the other recent North African revolutions.

I suppose the point at which "all other options have failed" is a debatable one, since everyone has different opinions on what constitutes a valid option.

In the scenario that existed last week, it wasn't only 'what other options there', but 'what other options are there that will prevent Gadafi killing off the revolutionaries before the week is out. Other options of the latter type were non-existent.

Gadafi needs to end it by standing down and the Libyan Government declaring free elections subject to UN oversight.

I'd say even the icon grid claim is reaching. The pictures shown all show the Android application drawer. The actual home screen on Galaxy S devices, what shows up after unlocking, is not the icon grid with a dock. You have to dig into the phone to get to the grid of icons, which frankly again has been shown to be a pretty standard phone UI. Older Palm/Sony models had the "icon grid" UIs in their phones also. :

    http://www.mobiledia.com/reviews/sonyericsson/t610/images/front.jpg
    http://www.mobileincanada.com/images/unlock/att-palm-treo-600.jpg

Let's face it, the "icon grid" has been a UI for quite a while now :

    http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/p/progman.jpg
    http://i55.tinypic.com/jzzc53.png
    http://www.guidebookgallery.org/pics/gui/system/managers/filemanager/cde15solaris9.png

And all of them had a dock too? And the page change notifier and similar styled icons?

People fail to understand that Apple isn't suing for grid layout. They are suing for the entire phone which looks just like an iPhone. Simple.

Well if the content is crap, who cares to watch? Content of TV is more important to me. I'd rather see a fascinating news show or program over rabbit ears than watch the Today Show in HD.

This wasn't clear the first time. You sounded like a crazed American Idol fan with your original post. And HD broadcasts are nothing new...This is NEW because it is on a 3 hour weekday morning telecast. That makes it NEW and NEWS. Nothing about content. I NEVER watch American Idol. You are judgemental.

Millions watch that crap so your opinion of it is irrelevant to the market forces.

So you don't expect the Mac Pro at WWDC?? Or only a dual core version using Conroe?

I agree single Woodcrest doesn't make sense. So we have two options for Quad core - Dual Woodcrest and single Kentsfield. Of course 2xWodcrest is going to be more expensive but I wonder by how much more. I am guessing $400. But, if you do that, you have the same motherboard across the Mac Pro (and possibly shared with XServe as well) and for that $400 you also get FB-DIMM and higher RAM ceiling. Also, the same platform can be used with Clovertown to scale to 8 core workstation early Q1'07. If Kentsfield is used then 4 core is the end of the line. Not really. Yorkfield is the 8 core follow on to Kentsfield in the Conroe class motherboard. Should be shipping by next Spring. So I don't expect Mac Pro to exclusively use Conroe/Kentsfield. Either two different boards - Conroe/Kentsfield on the low end and Woodcrest/Clovertown on the high end. Or Woodcrest/Clovertown across the board. Given the reasons above, I expect it will be the latter.Given the above reasons, I expect it will be the former. The whole line will be Conroe based EXCEPT for the ONE top model which will be based on a Woodcrest MoBo etc so each time the top doubles it's core count from 4 to 8 then 16, the lower models double theirs from 2 to 4 then 8, all in less than a year from now.Conroe deserves to be in the Apple lineup. I expect it will be in the upgraded (perhaps a larger i.e. 23") iMac. Apple may also release another desktop to fill the gap between the Mini and the Pro. That option has been discussed here as well.I think it's safe to say we may witness the fastest acceleration in affordable computing power in the history of personal computing during this next year.

I think most of your proposed reasons aren't really as practical or useful as people think in practice (that is, most people would never do it, or otherwise gain an advantage); however:

And bluray drives will be INCREDIBLY expensive when these machines ship, not to mention who knows how well they will burn cd's and dvd's (assuming that all bluray drives will be burners, none of them readers only). Many people will want to wait and add a bluray or hd-dvd later, especially since nobody knows which will be the winning format.

This one I can believe. Room for a future HD optical disk format reader. Makes sense. I was envisaging the Mac Pro coming with two drives, but it makes sense it would come with one and have a slot for a new one for a later date. I suspect a standalone BR or HDDVD drive would cost less than one that also has to replace the functionality of a Superdrive.

If this is Apple's reasoning, it also suggests they're being more pragmatic than analysts keep suggesting on the whole DVDng war. Which makes sense. I have a gut feeling that HDDVD and Bluray are to DVD what SACD and DVD-Audio are to CDs.

One way to get eight cores is to get 4 Mac Minis (just wait for the lowest model to become dual core), stack them up, and put them on a KVM. You get 8 cores, and 4 optical drives for *cheap*. Just a thought.;)Problem with that arrangement is that you are limited to the use of two cores for any one appication and there are already several I use that can use up to almost 3 at once. It would also get very confusing which mini you are on at a given moment.

Yeah I could also get a second G5 Quad. But that would be cheating. :D

It amazes me that people can get so worked up about a processor that was only officially released three weeks ago.

It never ends either. As soon as Merom chips are in the MacBook range everyone will just move on to the next thing. When are Apple going to put quad cores in their high end products? When are the Macbooks going to be updated with Santa Rosa? When are we going to get nand cache?

It amazes me that people who are so opposed to discussion of upcoming Merom notebooks still click on the links to the forums with titles using the terms "Merom" and "MacBook Pro". If you're a regular on the forums, sure, I can see how constant discussion about the "next" platform might get old. So ignore them. Do something productive with your time. In my case, I am currently in the market for a MBP. I have two other laptops, so I don't need one. But I want one. And when it's likely that updates are imminent, it's smart in my case to wait. For that, these threads serve a purpose, by notifying me of new rumors/news that I might not find otherwise. In addition, I learned of the student ADC membership which may save me $400 on my new laptop purchase. Once I buy the notebook, I will probably not look at this site very often for a few years, when I am ready to buy a new one. So let people talk about new hardware. People who are getting ready to spend >$2000 on a laptop have every right to anticipate when the next "update" will be, so they can better time when to make their purchase.

What's funny is that even if new MacBooks and MacBook Pros were released tomorrow with the newer Merom chip, 90% of you folks in here wouldn't notice a difference in your daily computing. You would not say "OMG, this 64 bit processing and extra .16Ghz speed is AWESOME!!! I can't BELIEVE I lived without this for so long!!!" You wouldn't even notice unless someone told you.

Granted, my argument will likely place me in the other 10% of posters. But here goes anyway. Some of us aren't here because we are looking forward to a 16GHz speed increase. Some of us see other tangible benefits to a MBP update.

    1. The 64-bit ISA, for a few reasons. First, what if I want to run Vista sometime down the road? Leopard will support 32-bit processors, but why not take full advantage of 64-bit capabilities when it's built in? Those of us who purchase will likely have the machine for a few years. Who knows what kinds of applications that take advantage of a 64-bit ISA will emerge during that time? Also, from a development aspect, I am looking forward to having a 64-bit machine available to me.

    2. Possiblity of other upgrades, and/or a price decrease. Some changes that would be nice are: more memory as a base option (for equal or lesser price), easily replaceable HD, upgraded graphics card, etc... The list goes on. It is redundant to post this here, since it is all over the entries in this thread (and others).

When most people in this thread say "Merom", what they really mean is "notebook with a Merom processor and hopefully some other changes for the better as well." Sure, there are others who just hear the word "Merom," know it's the latest Intel chip, and want it for purely that reason. Well, you know what? They're getting ready to spend a lot of money on a machine, so they can wait for whatever they want to wait for. Give 'em a break. Let them discuss it. Let them speculate. If you get tired of it, don't read the thread. And don't be condescending towards them just because they want to feel like they made a smart purchase.

The whole birther thing just confirms my belief that these people are born with a total lack of a sense of shame. This "layers" nonsense is stupid enough, but we all know it's going to continue (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42786288/ns/politics-decision_2012/) far beyond even that.

The publisher of an upcoming book questioning the circumstances of President Barack Obamas birth took credit Wednesday for fueling conspiracy theories about the presidents origins, saying he paid for an army of private detectives in Hawaii and provided information about the issue to Donald Trump.

Joseph Farah, the founder and chief executive officer of World Net Daily, a conspiracy-mongering website with its own publishing arm, also said he has no intention of standing down despite the White Houses release of the so-called long form birth certificate showing that Obama was born in the state of Hawaii on Aug. 4, 1961, as he always has said.

Im not apologizing for nothing, a defiant Farah said in a telephone interview with NBC News, insisting there are still questions about Obamas citizenship aside from where he was born.

The comments by Farah underscore Obamas observation Wednesday that hard-core birthers are unlikely to be persuaded by any evidence, no matter how compelling....

Farah, who still believes there was foul play associated with the death of Clinton White House lawyer Vince Foster, would seem to be a perfect example....

In fact, Farah said, Obamas citizenship, not his birth, is actually the principal theme of World Net Dailys upcoming book by Jerome Corsi titled, Wheres the Birth Certificate? The Case that Barack Obama is not Eligible to be President. Corsi first garnered headlines in 2004 as one of the architects of the so-called Swift Boat attacks on John Kerrys war record....

(Farah) insisted the document must still be more fully analyzed before he accepts it as authentic. I think it will take us a little while to examine this and determine if its legitimate....What a rube. And paired with Jerome "Of" Corsi, yet. :D Now there's a beacon of light and truth.

Yes. Windows NT was running on machines with eight processors several years before OS X was even released.

Windows supported 64 bit platforms and dual core CPUs long before OS X did.

    On the server side.
Nevertheless, ok. Windows did it first.

That's probably because you're not interested in reading anything that might portray Microsoft in a non-negative light.

Couldn't be farther from the truth. I have no problem with Microsoft or Windows, evident by the fact that I've ran their operating systems for the last 10 years. I have a problem with all the crap they're putting in Vista, but otherwise - Win2k and XP Pro have left me primarily trouble-free.

So how many people in the world do you think have cell phones? Everyone?!?! Just doing a quick Google search, there were about 1.1billion cell users in the world in 2004. So, maybe it's up to 1.5 - 1.75bil now?

Now if there's ~700mil people in the EU with a workforce just under 400mil strong and internet usage is about 300mil. Ya, it would seem reasonable that roughly the same number of people use cell phones. Do you have a better estimate? I'm sure there's a lot of elderly, children, and poor in the 700mil that use cell phones, eh?

What about India, Japan, China? First of all, India and China have median incomes that are FAR less than the US or EU... so I doubt they have a relatively large cellular user base.

And oh, let me check with my cubemate.... yep, CDMA is used in parts of China.
Well, I dont know where to begin... I work in science and you have to trust me when I say that you can't deduct anything from the "facts" you have. You are guessing.
The fact is that GSM has 81% of the world market... and that makes cdma a small market.

I hate how some people think the ~800 standard cars are going to look like GT4 cars.
They won't just look like it, they ARE GT4 cars. Take note that NONE of the cars that are playable at these events or seen in almost all screen shots are Standard cars. I'm not "hating" on the game. I just question their decisions. As I said in my previous posts, I'm a very LONG time fan of the GT series. But, I'm getting tired of the repeated cycle I continuously go through with them lately. Super hype for the games before they come out, and then, regardless of exponentially greater feature list, I'm let down by the actual driving.

Again, I'm glad this game looks spectacular, because it really does. Even though the screen shots that we're seeing are from Photo Mode, the ones that have come out at GC10 are amazing. It is also practically bewildering how the game now has a feature list that is so huge and loaded with features, if you didn't hear it from Polyphony themselves, you might not believe it. But, like I said, the more stuff that keeps getting added to the game, and more minutiae they detail in the Premium cars, the more my expectations of the actual driving in the game rises.

If locations are recorded AND time/date stamp - then how much time you spend in each location is tracked inherently. If you "log in" at one time here and then another 20 minutes later - there's a history of time spent. Maybe not foolproof... but to say that no information is there isn't accurate.

There are a myriad of ways to track you if someone really wants to, and it's been that way since last names became popular in the 13th century (and phone numbers, driver's licenses, SSNs, W-2s, passports, time cards, tax returns, mail box contents, garbage, written receipts, passenger lists, customer surveys, relatives, friends, credit cards, personal checks, street cams and literally a thousand more).

Information has always been out there, long before the iPhone/iPad and the Benign DB. It's the use that matters.

    Myspace was never cool.

Okay, okay, so they have done NAB (they've never done AES, though, that I'm certain). But still: They pulled out of everything in the last couple years. Why come back to NAB? Why not just do a small-scale announcement outside of NAB's timeframe so as to maximize press?

Also, nobody answered my initial question. Why the idle timer? There's no point!
