Why is there no looting in Japan?
The Yakuza. (http://www.slate.com/id/2288514/)
And more importantly, the very fact that even the Yakuza operate off a very strict honor code means American levels of criminal violence are just unheard of in Japan. And you wonder why--and this is true!--that Japanese sometimes call teenage delinquents "Yankees" (I kid you not!).

This doesn't make sense to me... Why would they have included Netflix on the ATV2? I'm thinking no.
Why did Apple add iPod / iTunes support to a Motorola phone and then the next year introduce their own phone? Apple has the morals of an alley cat.

I like the idea of keeping a standing 3:00 meeting every day of the expo, since we'll all have different schedules. Some of us may show up on several days, just to see who else is there.
But if we want to set one BIG meeting that everybody should plan to attend, I suggest Wednesday, Jan. 10th, 3:00 at the horseshoe. By then, some of the craziness of the first day will have died down, and we'll all have had a chance to see the new stuff on display in the Apple booth, and around the exhibition halls.
Sound like a plan?
I like that plan. We've only had four people participate in the Doodle poll linked on the previous page, so I'd like to see some more input about people's availability, but Wednesday sounds like a great option for a major MacRumors meet-up!

Does anyone remember that back in the day's of mac classics or maybe it was the performa lineup. When I was about 10 years old. There was a little program where you went diving and it was designed to teach you how the mac interface worked. With Drag and Drop etc.
Now I too have experienced windows friends getting very stressed that the mac is rubbish because it doesn't work. You walk over. Show them how it works and due to their pride they then won't admit that it is great because they feel stupid for not trying your solution.
What if there was a nice program that just helped them into the right mode of thinking. A sort of quick intro for ex windows users. We could call it iRehab?

How can Apple design a phone that will make it impossible for a 13 year old to scream into while driving her SUV?? I think you might be putting too much pressure on Apple there. Maybe a shock collar that can detect the high pitched squeal of an adolescent teenage girl...hooked into the ignition of the car so when it detects the girls voice and the engine engaged at the same time.....zzzzzzztttttttt!!!!! Ok that went way to far. Apple can make a cool phone...but it is still up to the people not to be idiots while using them.
If a 13 year old girl is driving an SUV we have a larger problem than her phone!

Showing how Android is surging ahead is meant to show which OS is winning, but often (as is the case with this report, I believe) they are only looking at phone sales. Because iOS runs on iPads and iPods, Apple's share is higher. I wish we could get more concrete evidence on this.

The Death Grip is not a myth. I can hold my phone for 20 seconds or so and lose all signal all the way from 5 bars. On top of that, I've had issues importing photos on the phone into iPhone. This is also my second iPhone 4 this month due to said issues.
I just returned my iPhone 4 and got a full refund.
If Apple says there is not an issue, then they have their heads up their a$$es.
PatF
BTW, I have always held my phones in the Death Grip fashion. My hearing is much better on my left ear, I can't listen with my right, neither can my sister who is deaf in her right ear.
I have consistently had dropped calls with the way I hold it. I am NOT going to hold it "Different" because of a design flaw. I hold it tight to my left ear (I'm a rightie) and I hold it covering the part people are saying you are not supposed to hold it. Why? Because that is most comfortable for me and the way I have always held it.
You know, this whole iPhone 4 things has been a debacle. The lost phone, the search of a person's computer and home because of it, no iPhone 4 WHITE news, the crappy rollout, the lack of phones and news. The iPhoto problem. It's just tainted any good feelings I've had for the iPhone 4.
On top of that, I HATE the boxy feel of the phone. It's hard to hold and does not fit comfortably and you never know which side is which.
I'm happy with my 3GS now and I'm glad I did not sell it!

I suppose the "True Video" iPod will be released at a special event along side the iPhone and PowerBook G5? :p
(Well, two out of the three would be nice.)
why is it still funny to sarcastically imply that the Powerbook G5 will be here "next tuesday". It's not so clever anymore and it doesn't really pertain to anything. so please guys, can we poke fun at apple's track record in a new and exciting way?
Speaking of the Ipod: I honestly don't think apple would have dropped the prices of the current 5.5's without providing a top end product (i.e. Video Ipod) before the end of the year. As it stands, the current 5.5 is only 50 bucks more than the overpriced nano. That's not much product differentiation at all and it hints that the current Ipod won't be top tier much longer.
peace

I just spoke with Apple Support because I was worried that an order place today (with the 3-4 week lead-time) would ship before my order which I placed last week when the lead-time was 4 - 5 weeks.
I was told that I shouldn't cancel my order placed last week because it will ship before orders placed after it.
Yay!! I look forward to getting my iPad sooner.:apple::D
I mean... who writes this stuff?

There are two things that will help us receive our orders. (1) Apple is speeding up production and getting caught up on demand. (2) A lot of people that that originally placed orders are buying via retail and canceling their orders, which pushes up our processing time.
Please people out there, if you are one of those lucky ones, and don't have intention to keep online order, please cancel.
Thanks.

1) Eh.. $p by definition would be the pure gravy.. stuff like advertising and administration would fall under $c.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=AAPL&annual
Using you definition Apple's net profit margin was ~12% for the last year reported here (2005), i.e. nowhere near 20%. Using the more typical definitions they're operating with 29% gross margin accross the board. Which is pretty typical. G&A expenses were similar to the net profit (again typical) and R&D was less (~5%). Pretty typical.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=DELL&annual
Dell's most recent profit margins accross the board were 18% gross and 8% net with 9% G&A and under 1% R&D.
These differences are consistent with the two companies differing business models. Dell does no R&D, and thus can't expect to command the extra 4% profit margin.

It's truly shocking how many empty headed people offer a mac mini as an idea when someone obviously wants an expandable system. He already has a tower and is looking at another tower so spending more and getting what he doesn't want is a solution somehow.. Wow.
Anyway.. some actual advice intended to help you. I wouldn't buy a G5 tower myself as they are far too unreliable. I have posted about this before and they are quite unreliable. This (http://www.macintouch.com/reliability/pmg5.html) link shows extensive research based on actual Apple repair records on G5's. A quick sum up is that even the most reliable one (the dual 2.3GHz) saw 11% go in the shop for one reason or another. The worst model (the first dual 2GHz) saw a whopping 32% in the shop for repair.
Best and cheapest solution in my mind..
Get a G4 MDD dual 1.25 or dual 1.42. Even the dual 1.25 will be a world apart performance wise compared to your single 867MHz. Not quite as fast as a dual G5 but really not all that much slower and much more reliable. A fair price of ebay for these models would be maybe 250-300. I prefer the heavily upgraded Sawtooth I have but it's a much bigger investment than an ebay MDD. Even the low end dual 867 MDD I used to own handled all flash quite well. A 1.25+ won't have any issues with anything you want to do at all.
How is the Mac mini not expandable? The current mini, can handle up to 8GB of RAM, and can be configured up to 1 TB of HDD space. Then, you can add many, many peripherals. The dual core processor alone is worth the extra $. What can you expand on a G4 or G5 that you can't expand on a mini?
If I had to choose $250 for a G5, or $700 for a mini, $600 or less referbed, I'd choose the mini.

If this is indeed the new iCal i will be happy, just open up the old ical next to that picture then you will see what i mean.
Funny, I had the opposite reaction.
Sure, it's cleaner. But for me, it just showed that once again, iCal is an anemic upgrade and missing the basic features that every calendaring program has had since 1992.

Apple dugg a huge hole for themselves. They played with the marketing and PR department promising a truly revolutionary product like it is the case with each new iteration of the iphone and then the ppl believed and thought they REALLY REALLY need to have it.
Once they got it in their hands, they got offended that it is not working like they were told. Its understandable on one hand but on the other its just pure irony that the ppl really believe they need a new cell phone every year.
Its both sad and genius on Apples part.
